Remembering a deadly tornado twelve years later

Twelve years ago Monday, the Tri-State saw one of the deadliest tornados in Indiana's history. 25 people lost their lives after an F3 tornado tore through the area.

First Christian Church in Newburgh was just two months away from moving into a new campus.

"We were looking forward to moving in" said Media Director Guy Hall "and got word that the tornado hit our building, our new building, brand new building."

The new church was almost ready to open, but after the storm hit it was left in shambles.

Long time First Christian Church member Patti Callaghan lived right next door to the church and her home was damaged in the natural disaster.

"It was gone almost as fast as it started" said Patti Callaghan."We got upstairs and all the power was out we walked out and the front porch was down and the roof on the lower part of the tri-level was in the backyard."

Throughout the devastation of a wrecked home and place of worship overnight, Callaghan kept her faith.

"God was protecting us" Callaghan said "he took care of us and our health was good and nobody was hurt and as it turns out it was a blessing."

Twelve years later the church is still recovering from the six million dollars in damage done to the property.

However, every year on November 6th, they stop to remember.

"It seems like every year there are a few people who remember and will talk about it." said Hall.
