Sinkhole Opens Up on Covert Avenue

Part of Covert Avenue in Evansville is closed due to a sinkhole.

The sinkhole is in the 2200 block of Covert.  Both eastbound and westbound lanes between Parker Drive and Broadmoor Street are closed until further notice.

Evansville Water and Sewer Utility Executive Director Allen Mounts says it was caused by a 96-inch sewer line about 8-feet under the pavement surface.

Once utility lines near the sewer have been located, Mounts said the area will be dugout to determine the exact problem and extent of needed repairs.

Work is expected to take several weeks to complete.
