Solar Madness Weekend Kicks Off in Madisonville

If you shoot for the moon, you may land among stars.

For locals and stargazers counting down the seconds until Monday's solar eclipse, Madisonville's Solar Madness weekend is giving them something to gaze at before the main event.

“Gives them something to do when they get here, gives us something to do who live here, something to look forward to,” said FNL goer Kathy Day.

“We got all these old cars, got a bunch of us old guys and we have a ball,” said Charlie Oldsam of Madisonville.

And for those not going anywhere for Monday's show, the best part, the traffic is still manageable.

“So far I haven't seen that many people and I haven't seen that much traffic, so we wait and see what happens,”said Johnny Reynolds of Madisonville.

But when it comes to those getting in town a few days early, ocals say the eclipse isn't the only thing to see.

“Its the big town of Madisonville, the sign says it all, 'best town in America,' said Oldsam.

“We wanted to give them a good taste of what Madisonville has to offer, so hopefully they'll come back and visit us again sometime,” said Mayor of Madisonville, David Jackson.

The next Solar Madness event is the Sound of Independence Concert featuring Jennifer Nettles, formerly of Sugarland.

Gates will open to the event at 5 pm at Hopkins County Fairgrounds.

The concert is sponsored by Independence Bank and is free to the public.
