Speeding Car Leads to Drug and Weapons Charges

Indiana State Police say a car going more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 64 led to drug and weapon charges.

ISP says troopers clocked a silver 2016 Chevrolet Cruze driving eastbound at 101 miles per hour just after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Spencer County. Troopers say the car reached 113 miles per hour before finally stopping.

While troopers were talking to the driver, 21-year-old Christopher Mackey of Aurora, Colorado, they say they could smell marijuana coming from the car.

Troopers searched the car and say they found a loaded 9mm handgun with a 30 round magazine at the feet of the passenger, 25-year-old Justin Beckner of North Tazewell, Virginia. ISP says Beckner did not have a license for the gun. Troopers say they also found about one pound of marijuana in the trunk of the car.

Mackey and Beckner were arrested and taken to the Spencer County Jail. Mackey is charged with dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. Beckner is charged with dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, and possession of a firearm without a license.
