U of L Students Uncertain After Pitino Announcement

Controversy surrounding University of Louisville's basketball program came to a head Wednesday as Head Coach Rick Pitino and Athletic Director Tom Jurich were placed on administrative leave in the midst of an FBI probe into recruiting.

The University of Louisville's campus was filled with a sense of uncertainty Wednesday, as the news of Pitino and Jurich's adminstrative leave settled in.

University of Louisville felt the heat Wednesday as a play for pay scandal comes on the heels of yet another controversy surrounding the school and program last year, an escort sex scandal.

"I was kind of surprised because after last year I thought they'd get their act together, try to be on their best behavior, get everything back in order, but they did not,"said student Jordyn Jerboe.

U of L students and fans alike told Eyewitness News they are fed up.

"I feel like its been a long time coming just because of the past scandal that already happened and then this, its kind of like inevitable,” said U of L sophomore Joey Breckenridge.

The news proved to have an effect on more than just the basketball program.

"Its hurting the entire school and looks bad on everyone, its kind of hurting our credentials, we have a lot of students who are worried we're not even going to get a degree from here, so not only is it effecting that but its just that the more that this stuff keeps happening, it just looks really bad on us right now,"said student Danielle Hawkins.

Several students say not making it to the tournament this year is the least of their worries.

Hawkins said,”It definitely with all the talk and all the chatter, just about the school itself, I definitely feel like my degree versus somebody else who's from UK or the University of Alabama, those are worth more, I'll be put to the side, like my resume.”

Despite all the unknowns, students and fans say the one thing they are certain about, the decision, at the end of the day, may be whats best.

"Its definitely going to be an adjustment year, its definitely not going to be our best year, but hopefully the coach is better,” says Jerboe on the prospect of getting a new coach.

“I think Pitino's done a lot of good things for our team, but it may all end up working out for our good, maybe we'll get a better coach out of it, I don't know, it just depends,” says Breckenridge.

The school says they hope to hire an Interim Head Coach and Athletic Director by the end of the week so the team can begin practicing.
