Union Co. Students Take Step to New Shoes

Kids do a lot of walking in and outside of school, but sometimes its in worn out shoes.

Students at one Union County school, are getting ready for a new pair, a month after the new school year started.

For any student starting out the new school year, new shoes are an important thing to have, although they can be rather expensive at times. That's why some local groups are helping students at Morganfield Elementary get them.

Students need them to walk the halls. But over time, their shoes need replacements.

"I just start getting sore because they start getting small and my feet start getting cramped," says Teagan Windell, a 5th grader at Morganfield Elementary.

"Your feet get bigger and you need new shoes because you are growing," adds Gracie Rhude, a student at Morganfield Elementary.

The students had their feet measured this week by two groups, Trinity Assembly of God, and Union County Happy Feet, in the next step to getting new shoes. The kids were measured in the school hallways.

"Weird," Windell said, describing having her feet measured in the hallway. "Because we had to take our shoes and socks off in the hallway."

School officials say an anonymous company is donating hundreds of pairs to trinity to be handed out. Principal Ryan Scott says the shoes help their feet, and parents who aren't able to afford them every school year.

"I think this is a way that these kids can feel loved. Just another way that somebody can tell them they are important," Scott says.

Scott says many of the shoes will be of the same style. Many students say they're excited to get new pairs, looking forward to having that spring back in their step.

"Thank you," the students said.

School officials tell us that some of the new shoes may not be arriving until early November.
