Volunteer fire departments review policy after firefighter was killed at crash scene

In danger or trouble, volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line at zero cost.

"It kind of gets in your blood it's one of those things that you want to help," Marrs Township Volunteer Fire Department Dale Wilzbacher says.

But sometimes it can cost a life.

"As firefighters we call each other sisters and brothers and all that so it really does hurt, you never want to see a firefighter die in an accident like that or a fire scene," Wilzbacher says.

After a Daviess County fire fighter was killed responding to an emergency, hit by a car investigators say was driven by another volunteer firefighter, a local group of volunteer firefighters are talking in depth about responding safely to an incident.

Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jerry Bulger says, "It's a preventable accident, it was a preventable accident something that should not have happened. This is a black mark on the volunteer fire departments."

As a fire fighter's pager beeps, the policy is in the back of their minds.

"Pager goes off, you respond to your appropriate station to get equipment because it doesn't do any good to respond to the scene if someone doesn't get a truck," Bulger says.

Both Perry and Marrs volunteer fire departments say they have a strict policy. If a volunteer first responder has a sip of alcohol, they should not respond to a scene.

A wake up call for some, but a heart break for all as local volunteer fire fighters send their condolences to their fellow brother.

"They have a big thing to address now, and you just hate to see that I mean our hearts go out to them," Wilzbacher says.

Both departments also have a rule where they are to report to the station they are assigned to pick up a truck rather than taking their personal vehicles, unless they have to pass the scene before getting to the station.
