Western Kentuckians Rush to Get Great Eclipse Glasses

Western Kentucky residents rush to buy their glasses as time and supplies run out.

People were at the Hopkins County Tourism Commission office on East Center Street making sure their eyes were protected enough to experience it.

The doors and phones were ringing nonstop with people looking for glasses to look at the eclipse.

"They're for myself and for my step dad and two neighbors down the street," says Karen Reynolds of Mortons Gap. Tricia Noel of the Hopkins County Tourism Commission says callers from as far as Evansville and Clarksville, Tennessee were ordering all day. Orders ranged from a few to a few hundred, as other stores across the Tri-State run out.

"I think I'm cutting it close,” Reynolds says.

As many as 16,000 glasses were estimated to be available on Thursday morning. One buyer from Clarksville asked for 600 glasses. Buyers say social media made it helpful to find the glasses quicker.

"Our PTA is the one that has posted it and everyone has been using the social media to get theirs too," says Jennifer Smith of McLean County.

"We made the phone call, and they said they had plenty, so we came and picked them up," adds Henderson Police Chief Chip Stauffer. He says they learned of the available glasses during a meeting, while calls to other Henderson and Evansville stores left them empty handed. 400 were bought for his and other city departments.

"It was huge because there were a lot of other things that we didn't initially consider in preparation, and one of them was obviously getting them glasses. so, we were very thankful that we were able to pick up enough glasses for all city employees to give them the relief they need,” says Chief Stauffer.

Lee Lingo of the Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce says sales will continue tomorrow and through the weekend until supplies run out.
