Once on scene, they found a man lying in the street, not breathing, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. First responders performed CPR on the man before rushing him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe road rage could be the driving force behind this crime. Officers tell us the man was riding his bike with a friend when a passenger in a passing car yelled something at the two men, starting an argument. EPD says the recent up-tick in gun violence shows the root of the problem isn't being adequately addressed, crime prevention needs to be a full-time job for everyone in the community.
"Until we as a community strongly address this issue, not just give it lip service when it's convenient. Not talk about other peoples' problems because it's convenient, we can get on TV, but to truly address the problems here in our hometown. Unfortunately, this 'just another one' is just the latest 'just another one.' There will be another one tomorrow, maybe the night after. We have to address this as a community in Evansville full-time, all the time, continuous. Not just once in a blue moon, not just when it's politically convenient. And once we do that and are honest with ourselves and quit being political about it then maybe we won't have 'just another one", said Sgt. Jason Cullum.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner has identified the shooting victim as Eric S. Brookins, 24, of Evansville. Police are still looking for his killer.
Witnesses described the car involved as a red Ford Sedan. Officers are asking anyone with information to come forward by calling EPD or the WeTip hotline, 800-78-CRIME.
