Man Killed While Transporting Melons, Former Mayor

The Mayor's Office in Fairfield, Illinois says it was a former Mayor that was killed in a weekend accident in Gibson County.

Officials say Harold Tubbs died when the bus he was driving dropped off the road at the intersection of State Road 165 and County Road 700.

The bus was converted to transport melons.

Tubbs over-corrected, crossing both lanes of traffic, before striking a tree on the opposite side of the roadway.

He died at the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted in Vanderburgh County.

Deputies were called out to the intersection of SR-165 and CR-700 South for a single vehicle accident. Investigators say a man was driving a white school bus - converted to carry melons - when it dropped off the east side of the road.
The driver over-corrected, crossing both lanes of traffic, before striking a tree on the opposite side of the roadway.
We're told the driver died at the scene. His name has not been released.
An autopsy will be conducted in Vanderburgh County.
