A McLean County High School English assignment is getting a lot of attention after some claim the teacher told students not to write about Jesus as their hero.

However, Principal Ashley Troutman said the teacher merely made a suggestion and did nothing wrong. He said the teacher asked students to write an essay using vivid imagery with details like looks, sound, smell and feel. Troutman said describing Jesus in that way wouldn’t be impossible, just difficult.

Daystar Worship Center Pastor Don Neal found out about the assignment from a parent and student who attend his church. He believes the teacher violated religious freedom. He has been using social media encouraging people to reach out to the school.

Troutman said they received thirty calls today. He said the teacher did not do anything wrong and will not be disciplined.
