Morning Walk Raises Awareness of Suicide
A morning walk raises awareness for a problem society doesn't like to talk about.
This morning dozens went for a one mile stroll through the Evansville State Hospital grounds to raise awareness about suicide.
This is the eighth year for the event. Organizers say it gets bigger and bigger each year.
Some walked in memory of a loved one lost to suicide; others in support of local suicide prevention projects.
Organizers say the tri-state region has a higher than average suicide rate.
Janie Chappell says, "the reason this is important for so many people is you never know when your life is going to be affected by suicide. there's been so much media attention and talk about Robin Williams death who I think might be a really good example of somebody who you wouldn't normally expect to kill themselves."
The event raises money to help support suicide prevention programs.
More than 30 people have died by suicide in Vanderburgh county this year.
