Mt. Vernon Ethanol Plant Sold

Valero Renewable Fuels has purchased the troubled Aventine ethanol plant in Mt Vernon, Indiana.

The Aventine plant is located in the Port of Indiana, but it has been shut down for approximately two years.  Valero says it plans to reopen the plant and resume production within several months.  Valero operates 10 other ethanol plants in the U.S.

The Aventine plant has been surrounded by controversy nearly since its inception.  Union workers protested at the plant while it was under construction, and at one point construction stopped on the facility for more than a year when Aventine declared bankruptcy.  Once the plant opened, it only stayed open a short time before it shut its doors.

Valero does not have a specific number on how many jobs it plans to create, but a company spokesperson says it will likely be somewhere around 65.
