Mt. Vernon Receives Financial Boost for Stellar Community Distinction

A sizable donation could help the city of Mt. Vernon receive a notable distinction. Officials announced today that Saabic donated $100,000 to Mt. Vernon's Stellar Community Fund.

Mt. Vernon is in the running for the state's Stellar Community Distinction. The honor recognizes cities that uses community, state, and federal funding to embark on large scale projects.

Some of the projects Mt. Vernon has started include a revamped riverfront, two new parks, and a series of new trails. But if the city wins the Stellar Community contest, the mayor says even more doors could be opened.

"If you're a business or an industry and you're looking to relocate," said Mayor John Tucker, "I think some of the things that you would look at would be something like that to encourage relocation not only for your business, but for your employees."

Mayor Tucker says the city of Mt. Vernon will match up to $1.5 million in donations.
