PREVIOUS: Evansville Police corner a suspect, that suspect then turns a gun on himself. It happened around one o'clock this afternoon near Outer Lincoln and Knight Drive. Police say they tried to stop the suspect in connection to an alleged criminal confinement case in the area. When police closed in the suspect shot himself in the head. He died several hours later.
Neighbors say their east side neighborhood is typically quiet and no one would ever expect something like this to happen so close to home. It was as easy as Sunday morning, she says. Playing fetch with her dog. Enjoying the nice weather, a cool breeze, and then chaos.
"I heard cars screeching around the corner. I heard these men yelling. Then I heard them yell 'drop that gun.' Then a gun went off," said Mary Beth Ennulat
About fifty feet away Ennulat was watching the frightening scene unfold through a pine tree in her backyard. "Several cops there with their guns drawn, pointed in my direction." Police were aiming at the suspect, but from ennulat's perspective she couldn't see the man lying on the ground. "I ran in the house and told my fiancee that there's a man out here with a gun." Ennulat went back outside and with a different vantage point says she say the man moving his arm while lying on the ground.
"It's disturbing, very disturbing," said Ennulat.
Police say the suspect was wanted in connection to an alleged criminal confinement case in the area. When they tried to apprehend him, he turned the gun on himself. "It appeared to be a smaller gun. It didn't sound like a big gun at all," said Ennulat.
Watching an attempt at suicide is something nobody can prepare for. Ennulat certainly wasn't expecting it. "No, no, let alone on a Sunday afternoon." And even though police officers are faced with difficult situations on a daily basis Ennulat says they too were shaken up. "Just looked distraught you know over what had happened. But apparently it was a fairly young male looked to be in his 20's, I don't know that for sure," said Ennulat.
The man's identity has not yet been released.
