Crews Battle House Fire on Evansville's South Side

- The Evansville Fire Department confirms one firefighter sustained injuries in a house fire at the 1600 block of S. Bedford Ave. We're told he fell from the second floor of a home while fighting the blaze. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening head and neck injuries.

The original call came in just before 9 p.m. It was tapped out about an hour and a half later. Officials say the fire started in the back of a vacant home, then spread to a neighboring vacant home. Neither home was occupied, but the Evansville Police Department was told there might have been a squatter inside the home where the fire originated.

Several blocks were closed off while fire crews worked to tap out the fire. Those streets have since then reopened.
