When Killian Construction, the general contractor for the downtown convention hotel project met with possible contractors to discuss bidding. Killian Construction told contractors the hotel would take 20 months to build. Putting the completion date in March of 2016. Not the end of 2015 as originally projected.
Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the 20 month projection is a conservative estimate to account for unforeseen variables.

"Anytime you're projecting a construction period there is one huge variable, it's the "w" word, weather," said Mayor Winnecke.

With so many failed attempts at building the downtown hotel any hint of a delay can cause a bit of a stir, but Mayor Winnecke says the 20 month estimation is not a cause for concern.

"We believe it's an 18 month construction period. I talked to Rick Huffman the CEO this morning. We still believe it's an 18 month construction period. It can go a little faster it can go a little slower again it depends on weather," said Mayor Winnecke.

The most recent roadblock in the project came when the owner of the other Hilton Hotel franchise in town, John Dunn, asked Hilton to do a study to see what affect another Hilton in the market would have on his facilities.  Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says he talked with a Hilton representative this morning and they said the hotel will be a Double Tree.

"The bottom line is they've been given the green light. They will get the Double Tree by Hilton franchise. So now all these things will start to happen."
Mayor Winnecke says construction will start on the hotel in mid-July and if that 18-month schedule holds true Evansville will have a new jewel downtown at the end of 2015.
