The start of school is just around the corner and hundreds of teachers from around Henderson County are in training today.
There's one training session that opened the eyes of many teachers.
Henderson County Sheriffs Department partnered with the school system and held a mock active school shooting this morning.
Teachers were assigned to classrooms with 1 teacher acting as the teacher while all others acted as students.
Soon after the active shooter had left the room, police entered to take control of the scene. They were checking to see if anyone had been hurt and searching for the gunman.
Police worked to make the situation as real as possible by shooting fake bullets and yelling across the school
One teacher described her experience:
"Even though it was controlled, that fear factor is still there and you kind of jump into fight or flight and you can't remember things. I was shocked I couldn't remember. I saw the shooter, but I couldn't give them any information when they came in"
Henderson County Police say this is not the only training that will occur and will be working on plans for the future to keep teachers educated on what to do should an active school shooting take place.
