The Board of Public Works has approved a request to seek proposals for the intersection of Washington Ave. and Weinbach Ave. improvement project.
Officials with the City Engineer's Department say a lot of accidents tend to happen in this area and believe a dedicated left turn lane would help alleviate that problem.
"You have an individual in those left turn lanes," said City Engineer Brent Schmitt, "and they're trying to turn northbound or southbound on Weinbach, and they don't see the vehicle that's wanting to travel through in the far right lane. They think it's clear and go to make that left turn, and they're struck on their broad side."
The project could cost around $1.2 million. We're told the federal government will pay 90 percent of that. The city will pick up the rest.
Engineers are in the final design phase of the project. Construction should begin early next year.
