Plans for building a pedestrian overpass on the Lloyd Expressway near Vann Ave. move forward. The Board of Public Works approved the city engineer's request to seek proposals for the project.

The pedestrian bridge would connect the State Hospital grounds to the area surrounding, where Roberts Stadium once stood.

You might remember while designing the project, officials discovered 31 unmarked graves. In those graves were former State Hospital patients buried in the early 1900. Back in March, archaeologists unearthed the remains and moved them to Oak Hill Cemetery.

"We are aware of where the other unmarked burial locations are," said City Engineer Brent Schmitt. "As part of the construction documents and bid packages, there is a very specific area in which they will be allowed to work."

Schmitt says once construction begins in the Spring, the city and the Indiana Department of Transportation will also require an archaeologist to be on call just in case crews find any additional unmarked graves.
