This year the Red Cross will be giving away 600 stuffed backpacks to kids in southwestern Indiana and western Kentucky.
"Parents have been so gracious," said Regional Communications Director Laua Limp. "I mean they're expressing their gratitude and thankfulness for this being in place. And really, it's us who thank them for being the heroes."
The backpacks are stuffed with more than 24,000 school supplies given from local business throughout the community.
