The Jason Stevens Memorial Softball Tournament is underway in Mt. Vernon. The double elimination tourney kicked off today at Brittlebank Park.
The weekend long event is held every year in honor of Mt. Vernon High School baseball athlete, Jason Stevens. Stevens died in a car accident back in August 2007. He was on his way home from the Air Force to visit family.
Dave Bell was Stevens' high school baseball coach. He says year after year, the same group of guys come home for this tournament. He said they even plan their vacations around the event.
"I've learned things," said Dave Bell. "I coached these guys for four years. And I've learned things in the last five years that I never heard of before, and some of them I didn't want to know."
And there's a familiar face in this crowd. Former Eyewitness News Photojournalist Clint Erbacher came home from Atlanta for the tournament. It's something he and his buddies do every year.
Proceeds from this year's tournament will go to athletic programs at Mt. Vernon High School. The championship game is tomorrow at 4 p.m.
