Warrick County Sheriff Brett Kruse is asking gun owners to be more responsible with their firearms.

Already this year, six handguns have been stolen out of vehicles in Warrick County. Sheriff Kruse says all of the vehicles were unlocked, granting easy access to criminals.

Sheriff Kruse is asking for gun owners to take their weapons inside with them each night or at the very least lock their vehicles because likely these guns will turn up later when used in a crime.

"They'll take these stolen handguns," said Sheriff Kruse, "and they'll trade them for dope, or they'll trade them for money. And the guns will be shipped out of the area, or occasionally they turn up in Evansville used in some kind of criminal activity."

Sheriff Kruse says most of the gun thefts have been in the southern half of the county, although anyone who leaves their vehicle unlocked is vulnerable.
