OMU officials are planning to do something they haven't done in several years, ask for a water rate increase.

They're proposing two hikes for this year and next year that would raise bills by an average of 26 percent.

For the average customer, that means a $2.50 increase this April with another $1 to $3 next year. Utility officials say its needed because of increased water conservation and increasing costs.

"The average water utility across the nation increases their rates by about three and a half to four percent a year," said Sonya Dixon of OMU. "And we have not seen an increase in our rates since 2010."

Owensboro City Commissioners could take up the proposed rates as soon as next month.
