The school year ends tomorrow for Owensboro Public School students, but educators don't want them to stop reading. They introduced a new program encouraging them to pick up the books through the Summer.

The Owensboro Reads initiative was introduced today. It challenges all students to read for 30 minutes a day during the summer.

School officials say it will help kids avoid the learning loss that happens once the school year ends.

"Many of the students that aren't involved in this type of reading through the Summer will spend up to two months," said Nick Brake, "once they're in school again in August, just to get to the point where they are right now at the end of May when school dismisses."

The program is one of several reading programs and camps being held throughout the Summer months.
