Eyewitness News is dedicated to keeping the roads safe from distracted drivers.

We know texting while driving is illegal in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois, but that doesn't stop people from doing it.

In Illinois, police at all levels are opting for alternative methods to enforce the law and keep the roads safe.

Officers in Rockford say the habit increases your chances of getting into a car accident by close to 25-percent.  They also say the dangers of texting while driving compare to those of drinking and driving because each text takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds.

A texting while driving ticket can cost drivers up to 500-dollars in fines, however fines are typically much lower for first time offenders.
