A road that runs through a growing part of Western Kentucky may soon get easier to maneuver. Plans are underway to expand the KY 54 corridor. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet introduced their five mile project during a public meeting in Owensboro.

The project will be divided into three different sections. Section one runs from US 60, to Ralph Avenue. The second section stretches from Ralph Avenue, through Water Wheel Way. The third section picks up from Water Wheel Way, and ends near Country Side Drive. Each section will have different expansion improvements from extra driving lanes, to additional turning lanes.

Al Johnson lives close to the area where the project will take place. He says his daughter owns a business along the corridor. Johnson says he looks forward to the additional development the project could bring. "KY 54 was slow for many, many years. It was slow ten to fifteen years, and it has really started to grow. It seems like now that it's started to grow, it's growing even faster," says Johnson.

John Rudd is a member of the cabinet, he says plan designs started about a year and a half ago. Rudd says it took extensive studies, but the project will serve many years down the road. "This road that we have designed will handle the traffic volumes that's projected twenty years in the future," says Rudd.

Project managers hope to have the expansion complete in about three years. The cabinet plans to review feedback from the meeting over the next few weeks.
