Senator Rand Paul performed free eye surgery today for some patients in Kentucky.

Paul practiced ophthalmology for 17 years before entering congress. A Senate ethics rule prohibits him from maintaining a for-profit practice while he's in Congress, so he does pro bono eye operations several times a year.

The senator says he's keeping up with his skills, so he can return to the medical field after his political career is over.

Senator Paul is scheduled to travel to Guatemala in August with a team of surgeons to perform operations for those in need.
