The U.S. Senate fails to pass the veterans bill today. The Democratic bill needed 60 votes to clear a procedural hurdle, but it only received 56 votes.

Republicans cited numerous reasons for opposing the bill and were upset they could not amend it.

Democrats accused Republicans of trying to add an amendment that could affect diplomatic talks with Iran.

The $12 billion bill would improve access to health care services and expand educational and job training programs for vets.
