Senators Propose Gas Tax Hike

For the first time since 1993, there's a proposal on the table to raise the federal gasoline tax.
The two US Senators behind the plan say it would keep the federal road and bridge fund from going broke.

Right now the gas tax is about 18 cents a gallon, the diesel tax is just over 24 cents.
The money pays for about half of the country's transportation projects through the federal 'Highway Trust Fund'.

That fund, however, could run out of money by the end of August.
The senators, from Tennessee and Connecticut propose raising the taxes by six cents a year over the next two years.
