44-year-old Michael Anthony Foster of Evansville is being held without bond in the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of Impersonating a Public Servant, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Resisting Law Enforcement.
His arrest comes after Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Angel Mounds Monday evening to a report of a man allegedly identifying himself as a police officer to several people walking by. Witnesses told dispatchers Foster claimed to be a member of a special police task force and that they should leave the area because he was going to raid the woods for a sex offender. Foster was wearing a hat and a t-shirt that said "Police", and also appeared to be carrying a gun.
Deputy Bryan Bishop located Foster behind the former Knight Township Fire Department building. After a struggle, Deputy Bishop was able to take Foster into custody. The suspected handgun was found to be a BB gun, according to authorities. A pocket knife with the blade open was also said to be in Foster's pocket.
Investigators say Foster didn't offer any explanation for his actions. They also say he had a small amount of marijuana and another controlled substance on him.
Foster is a registered Sex Offender in Vanderburgh County and has been on parole for burglary since 2013.
