The Evansville Fire Merit Commission honors several firefighters who helped save a woman's life at this house fire. It happened in the 900 block of 4th Ave in October 2012. EFD officials say two firefighters, Dustin Cline and Shawn Wiethop ran toward danger, bringing her to safety.
Today they received the Bronze Merit Award. It's an award both men say is possible thanks to the awareness of a passerby who alerted firefighters just in time.
"If that had gone unrecognized that could have been a fatality," said Wiethrop.
"Yeah, absolutely," said Cline.
"Honestly, that house would have burned to the ground," said Wiethrop. "Just, the time that it came in, circumstances, that could have been bad."
"Yeah, whoever that was did a great service," said Cline.
Several other fireighters and Evansville Police officers on scene that night were also honored for their work.
