Three trees were planted near the new convention center as part of the city's Arbor Day celebrations. The city was named a "Tree City USA" for the 24th straight year by the Arbor Day Foundation.
Officials say they plan to plant 100 more in the coming months along the riverfront.
"There's a huge planting effort down there at Smothers Park," said Owensboro City Grounds Manager Eddie Atherton, "to beautify and make that park as attractive as possible. What that does, it kind of extends everything down this way towards the west."
The city also got the Growth Award for their efforts in urban forestry and tree planting.
