Tri-State Health Rankings Are In
The numbers are in for the 2013 National Health Rankings and our area is near the bottom. The United Health Foundation lists Illinois as the 30th healthiest state. Indiana comes in at number 41 and Kentucky is 45. Hawaii topped the list and Mississippi came in last. Can these numbers improve? Health officials say the change begins with our youth. Kentucky is weighing in heavy at number 45 for this year's healthiest state. For the up and coming generation, Henderson county YMCA CEO Sheldon Booze says parents have to instill healthy habits for the young ones, "They've got to get more active..it's got to be more family and mostly parent driven." Booze adds, "Kentucky is not alone, we've got a lot over the years inactivity, we've gotten rid of P.E in our school systems pretty much, the kids now are in a mode of couch-warming if you will, with their electronics and their gadgets and so on." In order to jog into the right direction, Booze says it takes discipline, dedication, and commitment. The state is also in the bottom in obesity and high diabetes. In the survey, the Land of Lincoln has a high prevalence of binge drinking, and almost half a million Hoosiers have diabetes. For Booze it's simple, help our kids help the state, which in turn can become a trend to lift the probability for longer lives. The Henderson Y says it's planning to implement more family oriented programs..an indoor miniature golf area is coming in June.
