Warrick County Sheriff Brett Kruse says the number of car break-ins have gone up dramatically in Warrick County over the past week.
In the two cases we are talking about today more than just coins from the change drawer were taken.

Two cars were taken overnight Thursday in Newburgh. One was parked on the street in Old Hickory Subdivision. It was found yesterday burned in Jacksonville, Florida. The other car wasn't taken from the street, but from Kip O'Connell's garage. "There's one door from there into our den. They were basically in my house. As far as I'm concerned they were in my house," said O'Connell.

Kip woke up Friday to an empty garage. The only thing left behind was his wife's purse found in a nearby creek. "It was intact, had all her cards, even had a little cash still in the wallet. So they just chucked it out the window."

Early Saturday morning Evansville Police tried to stop the vehicle on Morgan Avenue, but it fled down Welworth Avenue straight into a dead end. Where it took out a mailbox and drove onto a lawn. One juvenile was taken into custody and O'Connell's vehicle was taken to the impound to be held for EPD. "The police believe that these people were involved in other crimes. So I have no idea if my car has stolen goods in it from other crimes. I have no idea."

O'connell says he understands why his vehicle is being held at the impound, but he doesn't know why he can't see it to make sure it is being kept in decent condition. "I've been told that the damage to the right side is sufficient that the windows can't be put up. As you know we've had near record breaking rain for the last several days. I'll probably be dealing with more water damage to the interior than the body."

Even though O'Connell is the victim in this case he will still be charged with fees for getting the car out of the impound. With each day the car stays impounded the fees mount.

Authorities say the car thefts are not related.
