UPDATE: Warrick County Sheriff Brett Kruse tells Eyewitness News that he believes sheriff's deputies have located the vehicle and driver that were involved in a deadly hit and run early this morning.

The fatal hit and run happened some time between midnight and 2 o'clock this morning on Epworth Rd. near Chippewa Dr. The victim has been identified as Jeremy Compton, 42, of Newburgh.

Narrow lanes and the sound of a speeding car are likely the last two things Jeremy Compton, 42, saw and heard.

But Ron Pressley remembers the shock.

"My nephew gave me a call right before we woke up. He told me somebody had been killed," Pressley said. "I'm shocked but I'm not surprised. I'm shocked and it breaks my heart that it happened on this road."

Compton likely never saw it coming, authorities say. Some time between midnight and 2 o'clock Thursday morning, authorities say the car heading south on Epworth hit Compton from behind. A passerby saw his body lying by the roadside and called 911.

It was just feet away from Pressley's house.

"I am so sorry that it happened and I have a sense of helplessness because I watch the traffic flying up and down the road," Pressley said. "There is not a thing I can do about it at this point."

Pressley said the 30 mph speed limit on this busy stretch of Epworth is rarely followed let alone acknowledged. Maybe now, Pressley said, it will be.

"It's a shame that it would take a death for that to occur," Pressley said. "It saddens my heart for the family of the victim. It makes it worse."
The lack of witnesses, investigators said, isn't helping either. They're working on a timeline by collecting surveillance from the gas station Compton was walking to, the gas station Compton never made it to.
