Educators say a strong academic start can open the door for an even brighter future. In keeping with their philosophy, the University of Southern Indiana welcomed more than 1500 new freshman this year; all with GPA's of 3.27 or higher. USI's President, Linda Bennett says that average is higher than it's ever been before in the institution's 50 year history.

The administration said that for the first time, no conditionally-admitted students, who may not be as prepared for a successful four-year college career, were admitted. The change has impacted enrollment numbers however; the university reported that numbers dropped by 5.4 % this year.

This year, USI was also one of the top two college choices for tristate area high school valedictorians.
