An Indiana state lawmaker from Evansville is encouraging area natual gas customers to voice their concerns over Vectren's proposed rate hike.

Democratic State Representative Gail Riecken is asking customers to get involved in Monday night's hearing in Evansville.

Vectren is requesting the increase to help pay for pipeline and other improvements.

If approved, Riecken says natural gas rates would rise gradually over seven years starting next year.

At first, customers would pay about a dollar more a month.  But by 2022, that could go as high as 14 dollars a month.

Riecken says she's particularly concerned how the increase might affect older customers and those on fixed incomes.

Monday's hearing is being held at the Old National Events Plaza at 6pm.
