Sydney Elaine Leathers grew up the small town of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The 23 year old graduated from Mt. Carmel High School.
Now, her name and face are plastered all over the internet. After the 'sexting' scandal broke on Tuesday, she deactivated all of her social media accounts. But that's the thing about the internet -- you can't really erase everything.
If you're a former congressman, you find the spotlight. If you're a 23 year old living in Small Town, Indiana, the spotlight finds you.
The scandal involving former Congressman Anthony Weiner and Sydney Elaine Leathers stretches from New York's high rises to Princeton's not-so-high rises.
The two are alleged to have had an online relationship that was one part political, another part sexual. It was a relationship that apparently started after Weiner's first 'sexting' related scandal in 2011.
A stop by Sydney's apartment went unnoticed and a phone call went unanswered.
We reached out to Sydney's father, Jim Leathers, and while he didn't want to speak on camera, you could learn a lot just by looking on his face. He became very emotional and you could tell it was a tough situation for a father to deal with.
But some people say it's a situation that came as the result of Sydney Leathers' actions.
A source with direct knowledge of the relationship told us what Sydney couldn't.
The source, who wanted to remain anonymous, learned of the online relationship in the Summer of 2012 when Sydney showed the messages to the source. Those messages, the source says, were either sexual or political in nature.
The woman says Sydney knew Weiner was married but shrugged it off because Sydney believed 'she was Weiner's number one.' The source says Weiner had told Sydney he would put her up in a Chicago condo and take care of her.
Sydney, who claims to be a part of the Indiana Progressive Liberals organization, worked on President Obama's election campaign as a field organizer. The political activist then quickly became a fan of former Congressman Weiner.
And as it turns out, he became a fan of her too.
