Officials say, Emilie Jo Turrentine went missing on Monday in Rend Lake. The teen was out boating with friends when she jumped out into the water for a swim, but never surfaced.
Hundreds of students at Carmi-White County High School returned from their Labor Day vacation; but one student is not there. Turrentine was a senior at the High School and she is missed.
Christine South says,"honestly it was like the pit in my stomach and just shock, I did not believe it".
A Former co-worker and colleague, South recounts the overwhelming feeling of loss as she learned her friend, Emilie was missing.
"I go wait, Emilie Turrentine?! Cause you don't want to believe that you know the [missing] person first of all. It was just a shock and I just looked around and at my friend who knew her well too. We both looked at each other and shook our heads no!", she added.
Since Monday, local authorities have been searching the lake in hopes of rescuing the teen. But, Tuesday afternoon they pulled a body believed to be Turrentine's from the water.
Turrentine who had just turned 18 Thursday and was looking forward to her labor day birthday celebration with friends as she posted on her Facebook page.
"Monday is going to be a blast. Pontoon boating with my friends for my birthday can't wait!", Turrentine wrote.
Those who knew Turrentine in Carmi say they are distraught over this inexplicable loss and have been posting comments of condolence on her Facebook page.
Eyewitness News spoke to the Turrentine's Principal who says crisis counselors have been made available to the 300 plus students and faculty to help them cope with the tragedy.
"She's just a really great person it was hard today to see the students come back, because I could see a lot of them are hurting; a lot of tears. My heart goes out to that class; her family and close friends", said South.
According to Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones, there is no foul play suspected in this incident.
The body was recovered in at least 10 feet of water. Officials have yet to definitely identify the body.
