Kentucky and Indiana leaders gathered Monday to announce a joint venture between the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana, the Henderson-Henderson County Chamber of Commerce and the mayors of Evansville and Henderson.
BridgeLink's main goal is to build support for a bridge that would connect I-69 in Indiana and Kentucky.
Henderson Mayor Steve Austin said the goal is to build the bridge in five to eight years. He said the latest price estimate is 1.4 billion dollars. Austin said it's more expensive because nine miles of highway will have to be built on either side of the river.
Austin said refurbishment of the Twin Bridges has been considered, but said they are focusing on building a new crossing because of how old the bridges are and because of traffic on US-41.
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said the bridges don't meet modern earthquake safety standards.
