The airline says flight 5017  came down near Mali.
At least 116 people were on board.
Radar contact was lost almost an hour after take-off in Burkina Faso in Africa.
The plane was headed to Algeria.
The airline's operator says it lost radar contact about 50 minutes after takeoff.
French Secretary of Transport Frederic Cuvillier  has stated a large number of French passengers were believed to be on board the plane.
Reportedly, Islamist militants have been fighting French forces in the region for months.
No word if any Americans were on the plane.
An ABC News meteorologist has cited the fact that the plane could have flown through severe weather.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
