Behind the Badge: Frank Smith

North Posey School Resource Officer Deputy Frank Smith is honored in Behind the Badge.
It's a sweet story about a School Resource Officer who is somewhat of a legacy in his community.  In this week's Behind the Badge, we take you to Posey County to meet Deputy Frank Smith.

"There's not a student that's gone through the North Posey school system in the past 25 or 30 years that if you mention the name Frank Smith, they know exactly who you're talking about," Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth explains.  Not only is School Resource Officer Frank Smith's door always open, huge containers of Skittles, Snickers, M&M's and suckers always sit on his desk, ripe for the taking.

"I'm a bachelor- I have no kids. Who do I buy for? I buy for the kids," Smith says.

That candy encourages kids like senior Taylor Wassmer to stop by for a chat.  "It's always good knowing that you have him always there for you, which he always is.  I think we're his number one priority."

Frank  has become something of a legend in Posey County, starting back in 1981 when he began substitute teaching while working as an Indiana State Police Officer.  For the past three years he's served as North Posey's SRO,  even working part of that time without a paycheck.  "To me, it's not about money, the safety and security of my kids, my staff, it's not about money."  He's now getting paid through a grant, but says he'd work again as a volunteer if he had to because he feels very protective over those he keeps safe. "You don't mess with Frank's kids- you don't!"

Paycehck or no paycheck, it's difficult to put a price tag on the legacy Deputy Smith is creating in Posey County.  "I couldn't have written the book better myself, I've got the best of all worlds. I play the lottery every week, but why would I want money?  Personally, I feel like I'm the richest person in the whole world with what I get."
