Sara Hilsmeyer is there on the worst days- searching for, collecting, and analyzing evidence from crime scenes that range from battery to homicides. "Physical evidence, it's not going to lie, it's not going to give you the wrong story. As long as you follow it and interpret it correctly, it's going to tell you what happened." And that physical evidence can lead to healing for victims or in some cases, grieving families. "When someone loses a family member to something sudden or tragic, their first question is really, why? I can't give them the spiritual reasons, but I can at least give the factual reasons."
But through the gruesome evidence and tedious paperwork, there is a more meaningful reason Hilsmeyer does what she does, and believes good can come out of even the most terrible of events. "Sometimes, that's the suspect changing their life around- they've hit rock bottom, and they are going to come out of prison and make a difference."
Hilsmeyer says her coworkersm, family, and faith keep her grounded. She also hopes to inspire other women who want to follow in her footsteps. "I try to do the best job that I can, I try to be professional, I try to put out that image so that other people know that you can make it work in this male-dominated job."
We salute Detective Sara Hilsmeyer, serving her community Behind the Badge.
