Big Rivers announces the retirement of its current president and c-e-o. Mark Bailey will be succeeded by Big Rivers Veteran Bob Berry on July 1, 2014. Berry will take the reins amidst several challenges facing the utility company. Big Rivers' two largest customers; the Century Aluminum Smelters at Hawesville and Sebree, have left the Big Rivers system during the past year. They formerly provided two-thirds of Big Rivers' revenue. Representatives of both Smelters say its power was too expensive compared to other aluminum smelters around the world. That prompted Big Rivers to seek and secure state approval of two electric rate increases for its customers.
