Some downtown business owners say they’re happy with the location Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke submitted Friday for the IU Medical School expansion.
If selected, it would encompass a six-block area with borders of Locust, 6th, 4th and Cherry Streets.
Jaya Dodd has owned Jaya's restaurant for more than 30 years. If the location is selected, she hopes the medical school will bring a boost in business.
“I think it will help us a lot and bring more people to downtown,” Jaya said.
Winnecke said the city has the option to buy all the property in the proposed area in the event the city’s plan is approved.
Officials with IU said they will take most of February to look over proposals. Sites on Evansville’s east and west side and in Warrick County are also being considered. The board is expected to make a decision in April.
