Downtown Evansville Site Chosen for New IU Med School

The Indiana University Board of Trustees has chosen downtown Evansville for the new school.
Downtown Evansville is expected to be the site for the new Indiana University medical school.

The school's Board of Trustees chose it Friday afternoon, but it will need to get approval from the Indiana General Assembly when the lawmakers meet again in early 2015. That okay is expected to happen.

Downtown Evansville beat out three other locations. Other possibilities were keeping the school on the USI campus, the potential Promenade site off Burkhardt Road on Evansville's east side, and in Warrick County very close to Deaconess Gateway Hospital.

The facility will be built in a several block area bordered by 4th and 6th Streets and Cherry and Locust. Construction should begin in 2015 once the General Assembly gives final approval.
