Drivers Advised To Slow Down As Roads Turn To Ice

This latest winter weather system has law enforcement warning drivers to be careful while driving on Tri-State roads.
This latest winter weather system has law enforcement warning drivers to be careful while driving on Tri-State roads.

The Vanderburgh County Highway Department had sand and salt trucks out, working the streets all day Tuesday. Emergency responders say they worked numerous slide-offs. They're hoping drivers heed their warning to slow down.

"Most people nowadays are in a rush so they drive too fast for the conditions and they can't stop in time. So we just say whatever time you think it'll take to get to your destination -- at least double it," said Chief Deputy Dave Wedding, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office. "And no matter what you're driving, if you're driving a four-wheel drive, a two-wheel drive -- if you get on ice you have a tendency to slide. So we're just telling people please be careful and let the road crews get out there and do their job and hopefully we can get the roads reasonable by [Wednesday.]"

Officials suggest increasing your following distance, begin stopping well before you have to stop, and clear your windshields and back windows so your view is not obstructed.
