The downtown Evansville Farmers Market opens for the season. Dozens stolled through the vendors Friday afternoon.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke kicked off the event along with author Jane Schroeder. Shroeder is the author of Market Table Memories, a book about her family's history with Evansville's farmers markets.

She says her ancestors were some of the first vendors when a market opened in the River City in 1917 and when it closed in 1996.

"You know where they vended bushels of tomatoes and corn and potatoes," said Schroeder. "I'm vending bushels of books trying to capture the memories of the days that they went to the markets."

The farmer's market will be open every Friday through late September from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Schroeder's book will be on sale at that time.
