Evansville Unemployment Reaches Five Year Low

It's a good day for the city of Evansville. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke announces the city's unemployment has reached a five year low.
It's a good day for the city of Evansville. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke announces the city's unemployment has reached a five year low.

According to Indiana's employment, the city's unemployment dipped to 6.4 percent in December. That's down from 8.2 percent a year ago.

Winnecke says this comes as the state's unemployment rate drops as well. Data shows Indiana ranks 5th in the nation in the rate of jobs added since 2009.

Winnecke says businesses can see the shift in numbers.

"In a meeting with the local building trade leaders this week," said Winnecke, "they're starting to feel some of this which is a good thing. They're trying to recruit good quality workers. So what we're seeing as a whole is job creation across the state, and that's drawing down the unemployment numbers."

Winnecke says the latest numbers don't include the latest and largest jobs announcement from Berry Plastics, so he's hoping for even better numbers from the next announcement.
